Detection of Thiothiamine in Onions and Cabbages1

In the foregoing paper, chemical and microbiological assay methods of thiothiamine were described and the existence of thiothiamine in vegetables was proved. From the vegetables rich in thiothiamine this compound was tried to be isolated, but it was found very difficult, since it is readily oxidized to thiamine in the course of preparation. Therefore the material was treated, avoiding oxidation as far as possible, and the existence of thiothiamine was ascertained by paper chromatography. Then this compound was determined after converting to thiochrome by cyanogen bromide in an acidic medium.
